No need to reinvent the wheel on this. There are plenty of places to find a model resume. If you google resume template, you’ll receive over 10,000 hits. Resume draft gets over 19 million hits. If you use Microsoft Word or Apple’s Pages, they have sample resumes. In other words, there are resources out there.
Start with a basic template and start replacing their text with your information. Some will ask questions that you answer and then the program or website will put your information into a resume format. I’m more concerned that you have something to start working with and modifying than get to focused on making the perfect resume. There is no perfect resume, but with technology you can have several resumes to fit the position you’re looking for.
Key Components
- Contact Information - essentially, you want your full contact information – name, address, phone number (home and or cell) and email address.
- Objective – this is not critical, but its a good way to distinguish different resumes for different positions. This is a short summary of what kind of position you’re looking for.
- Experience – beginning with your current or latest position, summarize your work history with each employer
- Education – starting with your most current degree, work backwards on your education.
- Skills – this is computer skills, certifications, languages, etc.
