One of the biggest changes to looking for a job are job boards. Years ago you hit the pavement and went to local employers asking for a job. Then classified ads came into popularity, and you checked the local newspaper listings. Now its job boards.

Job boards are online listings of job openings that often also double as resume databases for recruiters. The top ones are Monster and CareerBuilder, but there are hundreds of them. Don’t limit yourself. Do an Internet search for specific industry job boards. For example Dice is one of the better IT job boards.

What Then

Sign up for an account. You’ll then complete a profile and have the opportunity to post a copy of your resume. Take that opportunity. When you apply for a position, they often ask to include your resume. When you have a resume already included with your account, it is much easier to add to your online application.

Great Features

There are two great features of job boards for job seekers:

  1. Job boards save all of the positions you’ve applied for. As such if you’re contacted about a position, you can easily find the position or when you see the job again on another site, you can easily check to see if you have applied already.
  2. Another great feature is setting up job searches that will look for job matches and notify you. You receive emails when there is a match.
